About us
A true story
It was the summer of 2023. I came home relaxed from a holiday in France, reached into the key pocket of my backpack at the front door and realised: it's empty – MY KEYS ARE GONE. The recovery was over in an instant. I was back in Germany while my keys were still somewhere on the Côte d'Azur. That scare — and the topic — wouldn't let go of me. I thought, wrote and designed, and in Mitch Stark, a former colleague from our home-town design studio, I found the perfect business partner. One thing is certain for us: betterfound should only do good. That's why we produce our key tags and stickers in Germany and ship as sustainably as possible.
How we think
betterfound is affordable. Because we don't just want to help you — we want to make the world a little better. We believe positive change grows from shared values. Empathy, fairness and commitment matter to us. So tell your family & friends about betterfound — the better known we are, the more honest finding and returning becomes second nature. We like transparency, so here is how our income is spent: one part funds this website and our ID tags and stickers, another goes into developing the platform, and whenever money is left over, we support social projects in Germany.
Social commitment
Join us in supporting the Hamburg foundation Stiftung Mittagskinder! The non-profit cares for more than 200 children from disadvantaged families at two locations. The children eat there, do their homework, play together and are looked after by dedicated social workers until the evening.

What is betterfound?
betterfound is a digital lost-and-found. It is a German start-up from Hamburg and Munich, based in Munich.
How does betterfound work?
After registering on our website and starting an annual subscription, your starter pack arrives with a key tag plus five stickers carrying your personal ID. The tag protects your keys; the five stickers go on the things that matter most to you (like your phone, laptop, wallet, glasses case or suitcase). After a loss and a find report on our website, betterfound connects you with the finder by email using exactly that ID. All that's left is to exchange addresses and the finder's reward (and of course cover packaging and shipping) — and the world is back in order, one small piece at a time.
What do I receive after registering, and what do I do then?
For a contribution of €10.00 you receive our starter pack with one key tag and five stickers carrying your personal ID. Attach the tag to your keys. Put the five stickers on your most valuable things, e.g. phone, laptop, wallet, glasses case, suitcase. Please follow our instructions for applying the stickers correctly — a small tutorial is included in your starter pack.
What do I do if I lose something?
As far as betterfound is concerned, you've already done the important part: you registered and attached the tag and stickers to your valuables. Now good karma and a committed finder will hopefully get in touch with us. In parallel, use the usual routes: try to remember where you last consciously saw your item and check those places as soon as possible. Ask in shops, or look up the nearest lost-and-found office online. Police stations and municipal offices are also good places for finders to hand in valuables.
What do I do if I found something?
Great that you walk through the world with open eyes! To bring a lost item back home, enter the ID printed on the key tag or sticker into our "Report a find" tool online. We then contact you and send you the email address of the person who lost the item — we connect you, so to speak. The rest (exchanging addresses for shipping, covering packaging and shipping in advance, transferring the finder's reward) you arrange between yourselves. So you're prepared, both of you receive our finder's-reward guide by email. Your effort makes the person who lost the item very happy — thank you. Important: you'll also find the legal rules for handling found property in our terms.
What should finder and owner keep in mind in their email exchange?
We ask both parties to treat each other respectfully and kindly and to reply promptly. Important for owners of a lost key ring: please do not share the address the key belongs to. Instead, ask family, friends or the hairdresser around the corner for help and have the key sent to an address the key doesn't open.
Is a finder's reward mandatory, and how high should it be?
Such an important topic — and surely a real motivation for many finders. By law (§ 971 of the German Civil Code), an honest finder is entitled to a reward. We recommend a minimum of 5% of the item's value up to €500.00 and 3% for any value above that. Feel free to be more generous if the item has great sentimental value to you. After all, the finder acted socially and invested time to bring your lost item back to you.
